How to Design a Living Room: The Essential Product Checklist

The living room is where life gathers. It should be comfortable enough for an ordinary evening, beautiful enough for company, and personal enough to feel like you.

Here are the essential products that bring a living room together.

1. Comfortable Seating

Begin with a sofa, sectional, or pair of chairs that fits the way you actually live. Before purchasing, measure the room, doorways, and walking paths. Leave enough space for people to move comfortably around the furniture.

2. A Coffee Table or Ottoman

Your coffee table should relate to the scale of your seating and remain easy to reach. An ottoman is a softer alternative that can also provide extra seating or storage. Add a tray to create a stable surface for drinks, books, and decorative objects.

3. Side Tables

Place a side table wherever someone may need to set down a drink, book, or phone. Your tables do not need to match perfectly - they simply need to feel connected through color, shape, material, or scale.

4. An Area Rug

A rug anchors the room and makes separate pieces feel like one intentional arrangement. Whenever possible, choose one large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to rest on it.

5. Layered Lighting

Overhead lighting alone rarely creates a warm room. Combine table lamps, floor lamps, sconces, and dimmable accent lighting. Different sources of light make the living room feel softer, richer, and more inviting throughout the day.

6. A Media Console

If your living room includes a television, choose a media console that hides cords and stores remotes, electronics, and everyday clutter. Remember to account for the television mount, HDMI cables, and surge protector too.

7. Pillows and a Throw Blanket

Pillows and blankets introduce softness, color, and texture without requiring a major investment. Mix materials and patterns, but repeat at least one color throughout the room to keep the combination connected.

8. Artwork

Artwork gives the room its point of view. Choose something that feels personal and make sure it is appropriately scaled for the wall or furniture beneath it. Art above a sofa generally looks best when it is approximately two-thirds the width of the sofa.

9. Books and Personal Objects

The final layer should tell us something about you. Style the room with books, magazines, collected objects, ceramics, candles, flowers, or pieces from your travels. A living room should never feel like it arrived in one delivery.
