How to Design a Backyard: The Essential Product Checklist
A backyard should feel like an extension of your home - a place to lounge, eat, entertain, and enjoy the light. Dividing the space into separate seating and dining areas makes even a small backyard feel intentional.
Here are the essential products that bring an outdoor space together.
1. Create an Outdoor Living Room
Begin with a two-person outdoor sofa and two chairs facing one another. This arrangement encourages conversation while keeping the space open and balanced.
Choose weather-resistant furniture that is comfortable enough to use for more than a few minutes.
2. Anchor the Seating With a Rug
Place an outdoor rug beneath the sofa, chairs, and coffee table. The rug defines the lounge area and helps it feel like a complete room.
Make sure the rug is large enough for at least the front legs of every seat to rest on it.
3. Add a Coffee Table
Center a coffee table between the sofa and chairs. It should be easy to reach from every seat and provide enough space for drinks, books, candles, or a casual outdoor meal.
4. Create a Focal Point
Place a fountain or outdoor console opposite the sofa. A fountain brings movement and sound into the garden, while a console offers space for plants, lighting, and serving pieces.
This feature gives the lounge area somewhere to look and makes the arrangement feel purposeful.
5. Add an Outdoor Dining Area
Create a separate dining zone with a table and seating for six. Leave enough room behind every chair for someone to sit down and move around comfortably.
This area does not need a rug. Keeping the ground uncovered makes dining easier to maintain and visually separates it from the softer lounge area.
6. Provide Shade
Place an outdoor umbrella over the dining table. It should be large enough to shade the table and chairs without overwhelming the space.
A neutral or lightly patterned umbrella will provide comfort while allowing the furniture and garden to remain visible.
7. Layer in Lighting
Add string lights, lanterns, sconces, or rechargeable table lamps. Several soft sources of light will make the backyard feel warmer and more intimate than one bright outdoor fixture.
8. Finish With Plants and Textiles
Use outdoor pillows, a throw blanket, planters, and flowers to connect the backyard to the style of your home. Choose materials designed for outdoor use so they can tolerate sunlight and moisture.
